چکیده

An ingredients-based approach (e.g., Johns and Doswell 1992) is used in the operational prediction of tornado threat, regardless of whether the favorable environment results from midlatitude or tropical perturbations. Since the majority of tropical cyclone (TC) tornadoes are associated with supercells (Edwards et al. 2012a; hereafter E12), the forecaster typically can focus on the same ingredients known to favor midlatitude supercells—moisture, instability, (sources for) lift, and vertical wind shear. As in midlatitude settings (e.g., Markowski et al. 1998; Garner 2012), supercellular tornado potential may be focused further by the presence of baroclinic and/or kinematic boundaries within the TC envelope (Edwards and Pietrycha 2006).

Reversible Cape in Tropical Cyclone Tornado Regimes

Tropical cyclone (TC) tornadoes produced by supercells occur in characteristic thermodynamic environments of  rich low-level moisture,  high precipitable water and  commonly (but not always) enhancement to CAPE by diurnal, diabatic surface heating. These factors juxtapose with strong low-level shear magnitudes, high storm-relative helicity and enlarged hodographs to optimize supercellular to...

Compensating regime in axisymmetric vortical flows

Axisymmetric vortices with high level of axial vorticity are considered. Consistency conditions result in so-called compensating regime of the vortical flow. The power laws associated with this regime are applied to a series of vortices of different scales: bathtub vortex, tornadoes and tropical cyclones. Key–Words: vortical flows, bathtub vortex, tornado, tropical cyclone

P 3 . 2 Objective Environmental Analyses and Convective Modes for U . S . Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes from 2003 - 2008

Tropical cyclone (TC) tornado prediction remains a substantial challenge, both on its own and compared to advances made in prognostically relevant understanding of midlatitude supercells in particular. An ingredients-based approach (e.g., Johns and Doswell 1992), used for supercell tornado environments in midlatitudes, likewise can be applied to TCs, focusing on moisture, instability, vertical ...

7.a.1 Tropical Cyclone Tornadoes – a Research and Forecasting Overview. Part 1: Climatologies, Distribution and Forecast Concepts

Tropical cyclone (TC) tornadoes represent a relatively small subset of total tornado reports, but garner specialized attention in applied research and operational forecasting because of their distinctive origin within the envelope of either a landfalling or remnant TC. As with midlatitude weather systems, the predominant vehicle for tornadogenesis in TCs appears to be the supercell, particularl...

P 3.1 Tropical Cyclone Tornado Records for the Modernized Nws Era

Tornadoes from tropical cyclones (hereafter TCs) pose a specialized forecast challenge at time scales ranging from days for outlooks to minutes for warnings (Spratt et al. 1997, Edwards 1998, Schneider and Sharp 2007, Edwards 2008). The fundamental conceptual and physical tenets of midlatitude supercell prediction, in an ingredientsbased framework (e.g., Doswell 1987, Johns and Doswell 1992), f...
